"Under God" were the words Vince would remind us to emphasize during the Pledge. What an inspiring person and example for others.

I wish to express my deepest feelings of sorrow for your loss. I will miss Vince's happy smile and leading of the Pledge of Allegiance at any event he attended. He was an inspiration to many people, not the least of which is me. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

The Captain was a wonderful man that encouraged me to find out more about my grandfathers involvement in WWII. Everytime he came into the bank he made everyones day a little brighter. He will be missed greatly.

Captain Colan was a untiring force in the ongoing effort to restore the good names of Admiral Kimmel and General Short, a complete selfless projest which he believed in, this then can be a measure of his good work in life. He will be missed...

Captain Vincent Colan was a very special person who had an outstanding military career. He was my friend and a gentleman. He will be remembered as a patriot who served on the USS San Francisco CA-38 and earned the silver star on the DW Taylor. Captaon Colan was loyal to his country, his service branch and his superior officers. A veteran of two wars, who earned a silver star for saving the USS David W. Taylor from sinking, and at the age of 92 had the energy and gumption to fight for the two commanding officers at Pearl Harbor who are long dead. Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, who Colan served under on the USS San Francisco, and Lt. Gen. Walter Short were blamed for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, that sank or damaged 21 ships and killed 2,403 Americans. Both were demoted. Colan, a Mustang Officer, who rose from the enlisted to the officer ranks, has repeatedly petitioned the government to clear their names and restore their ranks, but his efforts have failed. In August 2006, he picked near the White House to convince President Bush to right the wrong. After obtaining the necessary permit, Colan and four members of Kimmel’s family marched along the south section of the White House. His motto an injustice to one is uniform is an injustice to all in uniform.

My dear friend Sue and family, I had the delightful opportunity to meet your dad at one of your Thanksgiving celebrations when I was alone. You always open you arms and your home to your friends--I know where you got that fine quality---from your dad. He was a huge part of your life, and will be greatly missed. I will call you once I get back to IL. I am at my mom's in Ct. Take care, and my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Love, Carol

Dear Jane, Peter, Susan and all the Colan Family: I had the honor of getting to know Vince over the past several years. I figured out pretty quickly that he was a true American Patriot, in every sense of the words. I also found him to also be one of the most dedicated Republicans I have ever known. It was truly an honor to have been able to call him a co-worker, acquaintance, fellow military man and friend. I was proud to know a man such as Vince. I know that when my father died (in 2001), words were of little comfort. Rather, that which stood out most in my mind were the folks who simply came alongside and were there with me at the time. Please let me know if there is anything you need or that I can do. Meanwhile, may HIS peace which passes all understanding be with you during this time of your loss. GOD bless!!!! Sincerely yours - (Former) REP Mark Crawford NC State House [2001-02]

Dear Family: I wish to share my condolences in the loss of Captain Vince Colan. I knew him as a fellow Republican. We have worked on many of the same campaigns. I admired the Captain so very much as he stood for solid, honest and American principals. He was a great inspiration to all of us. He will be greatly missed at the meetings, conventions and planning sessions for candidates. May God Bless all of his family. Betty Budd Buncombe County
