THE MEN WHO SERVED ABOARD THE:

USS SAN FRANCISCO

We are just now compiling the names of the men who served aboard the USS San Francisco, and there were many, so if you know of someone who does not appear on our list, please send us their name, and any information you might have about them.  We cherish any and all information that anyone has about the men who served aboard the USS San Francisco.  This is the whole goal of the USS San Francisco Memorial Foundation.  "Keep Our History Alive".

Pinch, Dick 1942-43 2nd Div
Pittenger, Roger 1934-38 S Div
Pittman, Elbert, Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class 1942-1945

Died April 25, 1992

From Mrs. Thelma Pittman, wife
My late husband served on the USS San Francisco, as I heard him say many times, 33 months.  He entered the service in May 1942 and after training went to Mare Island, California, where they slept outside until the repairs to the ship were completed.  He left the states upon completion and was on board until the end of the war.  He left the ship at that time and came back to the states to be discharged in October 1945. I heard many stories of the “Frisco” during the years.

He died April 25, 1992.

I found his name in the list, but no other information.  He was a Pharmacist Mate 2nd class. I am attaching a letter he received from Chaplain Sayre when he visited the ship for the last time, in Philadelphia, waiting to be scrapped. Hopefully you will find it interesting and worth posting. I would also like to send a picture of my husband later.
Best Regards
Thelma D. Pittman
