Hoyle
Andrew Taylor, a retired
Chief Journalist for the Naval Air
Reserve Training Units at both
Anacostia and Andrews Air Force
Base, died of cancer at home on
Sunday, January 19, 2003 surrounded
by his wife and children.
Mr. Taylor,
who lived in
Alexandria since 1952, was
born in Mayworth,
North Carolina, the son of a
Baptist minister. He entered
military service in the
U.S. Navy in July, 1940.
During
World War II, he served
aboard the Heavy Cruiser USS San
Francisco and participated in
thirteen major naval engagements. He
was aboard the
San Francisco in
Oahu when the Japanese
attacked the U.S. fleet stationed
there on December 7, 1941 and was a
survivor of
Pearl Harbor and later of
Guadalcanal.
He was an
active member of the Braddock
Baptist Church in
Alexandria, Virginia, where
he served as an usher.
Survivors
include his wife of 56 years, Joyce
(Welch) Taylor of
Alexandria; his son, Scott
Andrew Taylor of
Washington, D.C.; two
daughters, Robin Taylor of
Alexandria; Terry (Jim)
Wingfield and three grandchildren,
Christopher, Jenna, and Emily
Wingfield, all of
Alexandria.
There will be
a memorial service at 11 a.m. on
Thursday, January 23 at the Braddock
Baptist Church,
